Why Schools Should Embrace Solar Power Today
Switching to solar power offers numerous benefits for educational institutions, providing not only financial savings but also educational and environmental advantages. View our three key reasons why making the switch is a smart decision.
Educational Oppertunities: Solar installations create hands-on learning experiences and inspire students to explore renewable energy and sustainability careers.
Incentives
NATIONAL
Low-Income and Energy Communities – Projects in eligible areas may receive an additional 10%-20% tax credit.
Domestic Content – Projects using specified percentages of American-made materials may receive an additional 10% tax credit.
Direct Pay – Tax-exempt entities, governments and rural electric co-ops can receive the ITC as a direct payment instead of as a tax credit.
Transfers – The ITC may be sold to other taxpayers.
STATE
Illinois – The Illinois Shines program provides incentives based on system size. In our experience, these incentives return roughly 30% of system cost back to the customer. Public schools can receive an extension of this incentive.
Illinois – Smart Inverter Rebate Program: Ameren Illinois customers can receive up to $300 per kilowatt for installed solar or energy storage systems.
Maximize Savings
Financial Benefits at a Glance
One of the most immediate and tangible benefits of solar power is the potential for substantial cost savings. Educational institutions consume a significant amount of energy, which translates into high utility bills. By installing solar panels, schools can generate their own electricity and drastically reduce these expenses. The savings can then be redirected towards enhancing educational programs, upgrading facilities, and investing in new technologies that benefit students and staff. Additionally, many regions offer financial incentives and tax credits for solar installations, further reducing the overall cost and increasing the return on investment.
Lighting The Way
Providing Enhanced Learning Experiences
Solar power installations provide a unique opportunity to enrich the educational experience. By incorporating solar technology into the curriculum, schools can offer students hands-on learning opportunities that bring textbook concepts to life. Students can monitor the solar panels’ performance, analyze energy production data, and learn about the science and technology behind renewable energy. This practical, real-world application of STEM subjects can spark interest and inspire students to pursue careers in fields related to renewable energy and sustainability. Moreover, schools that prioritize green technologies can position themselves as leaders in environmental education, attracting students and staff who are passionate about making a difference.
